LG G6 Hands On

LG Electronics launched its LG G6 earlier in April 2017. The latest flagship phone from LG packs a number of features such as IP68 water and dust resistance and Google Assistant built in. I have a chance to take the LG G6 for a spin for two weeks to test out some of the features.

The LG G6 comes in three colours at its launch - Astro Black, Ice Platinum and Mystic White. The review set from LG comes in Astro Black. LG G6 comes with a 18:9 QHD+ FullVision display instead of the usual 16:9 aspect ratio. This means more room for more details. The details seem richer on the LG G6 screen.

The screen to body ratio is great with little space for bezel on the sides. I like the aluminium frame that spots a soft matte finish which gives is some grip yet it is smooth. LG says the rounded corners are there to disperse the impact if the phone is dropped.

When held in the hands, the LG G6 feels more comfortable to be held in the hands than some of the phones in the market.

The fingerprint sensor at the back can be a little easy to activate. When placed in my pocket, I have tried activated it accidentally when the pockets brushed against my skin. However, it is good that it is sensitive to my touch so I could get the phone to quickly unlocked with a touch.

The phone is much easier to grip and hold in one hand and gets unlocked when my finger is in place at the sensor. I brought it out for a week to test the usability and to take photos with the improved camera and camera app.

The LG G6 comes with not one but two cameras. Both cameras now comes in 13 MP, so check out how much more you can capture with the wide angle and regular cameras in comparison below.

Regular Camera

Wide Angle Camera

The enhanced camera application has the Square Camera mode. This is good especially for Instagram as you will have your photo canvas already in 1:1 ratio. Of course the Square Camera mode does not stop at giving you the 1:1 ratio, it brings Snap shot,  Match shot, Grid shot and Guide shot. LG has a great video on the modes.

As I love to share photos, the guide shot helps a lot and is my favourite shooting mode in the Square Camera mode. It gives you a "template photo" to literally guide you where to place your plate or food. Effortlessly making sure that your photos are consistent. Gif (debate is over, the creator say it is "jif") can also be easily created with the photos shot using the same template, giving a cohesive animated graphic within a few taps.

I also played around with the 360 Panorama mode. With the guide on the screen and the wide angle camera, more can be captured. Check out my photo at the link and have a tour of the Pang Sua Pond. https://goo.gl/photos/BsB89nMGEj9RQzZG8

Besides all these features, what I like about the G6 is that it is dual sim feature. However. the second sim slot shared with the memory card. What makes me want to mention about the dual sim feature is that the LG G6's OS comes with features that makes managing dual sim usage easier. Widgets, the notification area, and the cost save mode to make all the calls on one sim card. All are subtle but useful features to have.

So what is my take? I love the features on the new LG G6 especially the camera. The enhanced camera and application make taking beautiful photos easy with the LG G6.
